Ancient city of Chersonesos → North area

North Area is a hollow with slightly sloping narrow beach of pebble in the middle and high rocky shores in the north-east and north-west of the area. The area is limited by transverse street 6 on the north-east, longitudinal (north) street I on the south-east, transverse street 15 on the south-west, and water's edge on the north.

Although the area had been under investigation as early as the late nineteenth century (by K.K. Kostsyushko-Valyuzhinich), large-scale excavations of this region started in late 1920s and continued after the Second World War (by G.D. Belov, S.F. Strzheletskiy, A.L. Yakobson, and others). Nowadays, the archaeological excavations and restoration of the area has been being continued under the head of S.G. Ryzhov.

The years of excavations in the area have uncovered, partly or fully, several quarters, have investigated and restored large cult complexes like the Northern Basilica, Basilica within a Basilica, 1932 Basilica, and one of the most outstanding churches there, 1935 Basilica.
