Report of the State Historic Museum's excavations in Chersonesos, at the southern fortress walls of the city's water reservoir
Year: 1973
Author
N. V. Pyatysheva
Description

Similarly to previous years, the works of the year under report were made near the south fortificational walls of the ancient city. Investigation of the main city's water reservoir, which is 32x16x4 m, continued. In the north area of it, there were late Mediaeval buildings, appeared above a bank no earlier than the late thirteenth century, after the water reservoir ceased to function. In the year under report, another, fifth drain gutter of ceramic pipes placed vertically into the thickness of the wall, was discovered. Besides the water reservoir, the excavations were done on the areas covering about 1,500 square metres total, which annexed both inner and outer sides of the fortress wall with three embrasures discovered in the previous year. The material from 1972 and 1973 excavations allows the one to establish that obvious fact that Cherson, as a city, existed both in the fourteenth and fifteenth century.
