Ancient city of Chersonesos → South-East area

South-east Area is, first and foremost, the best surviving south-east sector of the city defence, as well as burial and economical complexes uncovered near the fortress wall. The area is located in a lowland; fortification constructions of Chersonesos were erected at place of a deep and wide ravine that flowed into Karantinnaya Bay and was buried in ancient times. The area was limited with towers and curtain walls (towers XIV–XX’, curtain walls 16–21), advanced wall and constructions discovered immediately near it.

K.K. Kostsyushko-Valyuzhinich started large-scale excavation of the area in late-nineteenth century. The exploration of the south-east line of fortification walls was continued by R.Kh. Leper in 1910s, K.E. Grinevich in 1926–1927, and S.F. Strzheletskiy, A.M. Gilevich, N.V. Pyatysheva, I.A. Antonova, V.N. Danilenko, V.V. Borisova and others from the late-1950s onwards. During this period, they have uncovered Greco-Roman gates and mediaeval sally ports, clarified periods of building for fortifica-tion structures, extracted unique polychrome gravestones from the core of the Zeno’s Tower, excavated potters’ quarter from the Hellenistic Period and a part of early necropolis.
